Lunch at the oldest restaurant in the world

The old city center of Salzburg is home to some good restaurants. Some with and some without Michelin star. In addition to this, it is also home to the world’s oldest restaurant. Founded in 803, Sankt Peter Stiftskulinarium has been around for over 1200 years and has had (amongst others) one of the world’s best known composers (W.A. Mozart) as one of its guests.

Inside you will find that pretty explicit colours have been used. The first room has bright blue walls combined with wooden furniture. An extension to this room has some red on the walls, also combined with wood but panels in this space. Move a little further inside and there is a much larger space. Less colour here, but nice brick walls. Noice levels are noticeably higher here. When walking to the bathroom, you’ll enter into corridor of burgundy walls which is also where you’ll find meeting rooms or private dining. There private rooms are pretty colourful too.

The menu is relatively simple, but as it would turn out also relatively good. Don’t expect Michelin star dining tough. For starter I had tomato soup and pasta with truffel for main course. The soup was poured into the plate at the table and there was a canelle of basil ice cream in the plate already. Pasta was cooked well with decent flavours and added to it a quite generous portion of fresh truffel. Portions are rather large and it wasn’t easy to clean the plate for main course. Because of the portion size, I was not sure if I would be having a dessert. However, a meal isn’t finished without dessert, so I kind of have to 😉 Rhubarb and strawberry with meringue it was. Where I was worried a little that the sweetness would be a bit too much, it was balanced really well. Loved it.

Altogether, I spent about € 75 which excluded drinks. For the same amount, you may also opt for a 4 or 5 course menu at some other ‘Michelin selected’ restaurant, the notion that I was having lunch in a restaurant that has been around for such a long time. Is that worth paying extra for a meal? In my opinion not, but the price is right for flavour and portion size that you’re getting here. Would I recommend this to anyone? Well that depends on who is asking. For a fine dining lover , I would not but for someone wanting a decent meal is a historic place the answer would be yes.
