Nathan’s in Antwerp – revisisted…

It was (quite) some time ago that we visited Nathan’s in Antwerp. Where at the time, in some ways it was great, in other ways it wasn’t. Well, there have been a couple of changes (for the better!) Having gone through corona lockdowns as we all have, the restaurant has taken this horrible period of lockdown(s) to completely transform the restaurant. On the outside, you won’t see much, but go through the entrance and you’ll see what we mean:

Where the walls were white with (virtually) no decorations, now there is warm wooden colors making it feel very different. We see new tables in a similar style and really nicely looking chairs that turn out to be comfortable as well. Some curtains are on some places and in summary from a cold hospital feel, it has been transformed into a warm and comfortable space. Instead of trying to eat fast, we now felt like taking the time to enjoy the food on offer.

As far as the food goes, not a lot has changed. Unlike the design/styling of the restaurant, for the food no change means a good thing. On our first visit it felt a little more asian-inspired then on this second visit. Nevertheless, the food is really good both in terms of flavor, but also presentation. The dishes are brought to the table by the waiter, who took the time to explain the dishes, as is normally done in fine dining restaurants. The difference in terms of service is that now there was time for a casual and friendly chat. It is a welcome change to our last visit.

What a great sight to see how the restaurant has grown. The one Michelin start that they have had for a few years has (in our opinion) always been justified. Now they also offer the ambiance and service of the same level as the excellent food. Nathan has immediately entered our list of favorite restaurants in Antwerp, joining In De Balans, Het Gebaar and (of course) ‘t Zilte….
