Heddon Street Kitchen – Simple breakfast: Nice, but not perfect

Gordon Ramsay operates a dozen restaurants in central London. One of them is located just off Regent Street, about half way between Oxford Circus and Picadilly Circus. As you pass through a little alley, you get to Heddon Street, home to Heddon Streek Kitchen. Where this is a classical British style restaurant with a focus on lunch and dinner, they also serve breakfast which was the meal during our visit.

The restaurant’s design is really nice. If you have visited the nearby restaurant Barbecoa (by Jamie Oliver), you will the similarity in style and layout. Nice wooden tables, and many of them, and a relatively small kitchen on the ground floor. Due to the low number of guests that come for breakfast,  I have no idea about noise levels in a full restaurant. Near the entrance you will see some books by Gordon Ramsay and bottles of his champagne brand. It is there but not really noticeable.

The number of staff should depend on the expected number of guests and we have seen very few other guests. Where the kitchen seemed fully staffed, the number of waiters was limited and at times too limited. It has taken some time before we received the menu. The waiter(s) also did not seem too keen taking our orders.

For breakfast, the menu is limited but go to any take-away restaurant and you will not have much more choice. We started with tea and juice, which was served quickly and in a nice little tea pot. Some time later, the meal was served: Eggs Benedict with ham. When you have a limited menu, it is important that every dish is executed to perfection. Oder eggs Benedict and you’d expect runny poached eggs with a rich sauce. The Sauce was absolutely delicious and so was the (lukewarm) ham. The good thing about the eggs is that I do not really like runny eggs. It isn’t that I hate it, but I prefer a slightly more well done egg. As I wanted to try the eggs the way they are supposed to be prepared, I did not mention my preference to the waiter. My eggs were like I cook them at home; too well done for proper eggs Benedict. When mentioning this to the waiter he seemed all but interested.

Despite the above, I did enjoy the egg and it was more than enough for me to start the day. At approx. GBP 12 (EUR 15/USD 17) prices  are very reasonable. You may spend a little more at Pret-a-Manger, but then you don’t get a freshly prepared hot breakfast.  Because of the service in the restaurant I am pretty sure I will go here for breakfast again. However, I am (somewhat) curious about their dinner service….
